Don’t get me wrong, I love working from home, and I love working for myself, but sometimes in can be a bit of a juggling act, especially as a single parent with two children.
Despite my Gran always telling me that ‘only boring people get bored’, I do find I have a fairly short attention span, and like to have plenty of different tasks on the go at once. This is fine of course, so long as I can manage to keep all the balls in the air.
Take yesterday for instance.
I’m upstairs in my home office, a nod towards creating a work/life balance of some kind, writing press releases about baby bath tubsand apron towels, whilst at the same time updating a few facebook accounts. I’m on the phone, on hold to the bank, chasing up some lost statements, and my blackberry is flashing at me.
It’s precarious, but under control.
Then from nowhere, my nine-year-old appears in the doorway, asking for my opinion on which fabric she should use for her peg doll’s skirt. I ram the phone under my chin, turn in my chair to look at her, and knock over half a cold cup of tea in the process.
Suddenly things seem not quite so in control after all. Something has to give.
I give up on the bank, shut facebook and turn my phone upside down so I can’t see the red flashing light, hastily mopping at the tea with my sleeve as it creeps across my desk. I look back at my press releases, knowing I need to focus on what’s important.
“Red polka dots I reckon,” I say to my daughter, “and what have you got for the hair?”
Because sometimes you need a nudge to get your priorities right.
